A Not Very PC Feathursday
Author William Edgar Thompsonâs use of Southern Black dialect in his self-published book Aunt Chloe and Her Birds, printed for the author by Kingsport Press in Kingsport, Tennessee in 1927, is extremely cringe-worthy, but apparently it was all the rage when it was published. A review of the 1928 second edition observes,Â
There is something about the negro dialect that fascinates children . . . nor do the children tire of them after they have ceased to be children. Mr. Thompson has taken this method of presenting his bird stories and has done so most successfully. . . . Mr. Thompson's excellent book should have a wide sale. It is not only interesting reading but educational as well and should do much good in spreading an interest in birds and their protection.
Yikes!
However, the book also includes eight excellent color bird illustrations supplied by the National Association of Audubon Societies, two by naturalist and artist Edmund Joseph Sawyer (1880-1971) and the rest by noted wildlife illustrator Robert Bruce Horsfall (1869 â1948). We could find nothing on Thompson except that he authored this book, and we would be curious to learn how the Audubon Society came to supply the illustrations. Each of the images is sub-captioned with one of Aunt Chloeâs folksy observations. We considered editing them out because we just find them uncomfortable, but instead of censoring, we decided to present them as they appear in their historical context. These quotes are quite tame compared to the dialogue in the book, some of which is unapologetically racist.

As my favorite member of batman's rogues gallery, I've put a lot of thought into how I would portray Penguin. I wanted to create a balanced representation of the character, incorporating aspects of his classic gentleman of crime iteration, his modern gritty gangster characteristics, and even small pieces of Tim Burton's off the wall concept of an animalistic, deformed misfit. I took a lot of inspiration from other sources too of course, most notably William Shakespeare's Richard III and Edgar Allen Poe's Hop-Frog, both of which are about scorned deformed characters who plot the vicious murders of their superiors while hiding under a meek veneer. Other sources of inspiration were Rico "Ratso" Rizzo from Midnight Cowboy, Frank Reynolds from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life, Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective, and some of gangsters populating the show Boardwalk Empire such as Nucky Thompson, Al Capone and Arnold Rothstein. One notable change I made to his general design was that I opted to give him a miscolored glass eye rather than a monocle, which I thought was a little too heavily leaning towards his golden age incarnation in specific. Also worth mentioning is I thought it would be cool for him to lean into his animal theme by having a sort of "zoo" of different animal skeletons displayed in his home's parlor.

Literary Canon (from kissgrammar)
The Holy Bible, Authorized King James Version [At a minimum, the books of Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, from the Old Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Apocalypse from the New.] Whether or not you are Christian is irrelevant. The civilization in which we live is based on and permeated by the ideas and values expressed in this book. Understanding our civilization, the world in which we live, is probably impossible without having read -- and thought about -- at least the most famous books in the Bible. Historically, the King James Version is considered the most artistic, and thus has probably had the most literary influence.

Dread by the Decade: Maniac
đ» You can support me on Ko-Fi! â€ïž
œ
Plot: A failed actor murders the scientist who took him in, then tries to replace him.
Review: Maniac represents all the worst of exploitation cinema, with terrible performances, writing, and cinematography mashed together for the sake of uncreative violence and awkward sexuality.
Source Material: "The Black Cat" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue" by Edgar Allan Poe Year: 1934 Genre: Sci-Fi Horror, Psychological Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 51 minutes
Director: Dwain Esper Writer: Hildagarde Stadie Cinematographer: William C. Thompson Editor: William Austin Cast: William Woods, Horace B. Carpenter, Ted Edwards, Phyllis Diller, Thea Ramsey
-------
Story: 0.5/5 - Flummoxing. An already nonsensical setup is made unwatchable by utterly incoherent dialogue, character motivations, and filler.
Performances: 1.5/5 - As fun as a hammy performance can be, some of the actors are so cartoonish that it's a bit embarrassing to watch. Meanwhile, others flatly deliver their lines like children reading book reports.
Cinematography: 2/5 - Poorly lit and mostly blandly framed.
Editing: 1/5 - No true transitions or logic. Intertitles describing mental illnesses unrelated to the story are shoved in at random (I believe they were meant to give the film an "educational" angle and avoid censorship).
Music: 2/5
Effects: 3/5 - There's a surprisingly okay beating heart in a jar effect.
Sets: 2.5/5 - Cheap but there's at least some dressing.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 2/5
youtube
Trigger Warnings:
Moderate violence
Sexual assault
Animal cruelty
Brief nudity

While testing the latest and greatest airship just above the atmosphere, Major William Allison (Robert Clarke) accidentally travels to the apocalyptic future of⊠2024! Little did they know. Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) is a low-budget, sci-fi B-picture from director Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934; Detour, 1945) and writer Arthur C. Pierce (The Cosmic Man, 1959; The Human Duplicators, 1965). To Chadâs dismay, the plot includes a lot of walking and talking across a set filled with inverted pyramids. Oh, and the mutants⊠sigh. Check out what the Grue Crew has to say about this B&W, time-travel trainwreck. Also, stick around for the usual batch of feedback from past episodes.Â

Ulmer Sci-Fi Collection, a trio of films that also includes The Man from Planet X (1951) and The Amazing Transparent Man (1960).
Gruesome Magazineâs Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by guest host Michael Zatz, is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), another silent scream starring Lon Chaney! Sanctuary! Sanctuary!
